The construction works on the Terzo Valico dei Giovi-Genoa Junction One Project are 77% completed, reported Webuild in its press note on 9 Feb 2022. Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi visited the project construction site. Once it becomes operational, it shall connect Genoa and Milan in less than an hour of travel, and strengthen Italy’s connections with Europe. Besides, the project will allow for a 29% reduction in energy consumption and 55% reduction in CO2 emissions as it encourages a transfer away from road travel. On Thursday February 10, the RH2INE partners gathered together to discuss their ambition to kick start zero-emission transport, by switching inland shipping to hydrogen and delivering to the goals of the European Commission and the Green Deal. A first blueprint to standardize these operations along the corridor was delivered by a CEF-study you can find here: http://www.rh2ine.eu/. It was great to see the energy and commitment of all parties within the initiative. Together, the parties within RH2INE hold the keys to a rapid upscaling of hydrogen for emission-free inland navigation. The consortium therefore was pleased to welcome new partners Provincie Noord-Holland, the Provincie Utrecht and the Port of Antwerp. The partners realise that (1) they cannot rely solely on hydrogen, so they are working on other alternative fuels and electrification as well and (2) a corridor is multimodal; all modalities should become zero-emission.
