Given the Green Deal decarbonisation targets, there is a need to decarbonise truck transport. But at present there is only minimal publicly accessible refuelling and recharging infrastructure for battery electric trucks (BETs) and hydrogen-fuelled trucks. Therefore, a study was requested by the European Parliament’s Committee on Transport and Tourism.

The proposal aims to ensure a minimum level of infrastructure and includes binding distance-based targets for the realisation of recharging and hydrogen refuelling points for trucks. For medium- and long-haul transport, publicly accessible fast-charging and lower power overnight charging infrastructure is essential. The power grid and its capacity need to be suitably extended and adjusted to become future-proof.

A strategic roll-out plan contains a strategy and clearly defined actions to reduce barriers. For example, by means of funding mechanisms, standardisation and development of a data governance framework. Find the study and management summary here (external link).

Open Logistics Foundation established

In the past weeks, the logistics operators Dachser, DB Schenker, duisport and Rhenus established the Open Logistics Foundation in Berlin. The purpose of the non-profit foundation is to build a European open-source community aiming to promote digitalization in logistics and supply chain management based on open source and standardize logistics processes through de facto standards. Not only is a technology initiative like this unique in logistics to date, the founding members are also taking on a pioneering role as to the future topic of open source. The foundation addresses all logistics-related companies and their IT developers. Through Open Logistics e.V., the funding association, which was also founded in Berlin, it is open to new members from all areas of logistics. Numerous companies already announced their participation in the funding association, but also associations such as the Fraunhofer Gesellschaft zur Förderung der angewandten Forschung.
