The Rail Freight Corridor (RFC) Rhine-Alpine has published its Annual Report 2021. Under the slogan “RAIL FREIGHT GOT BACK ON TRACK“, it describes how the RFC Rhine-Alpine reached a pre-pandemic performance level. Despite the major impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the European rail freight sector, 2021 has seen a normalisation of processes and transport volumes on Rail Freight Corridor Rhine-Alpine. Although COVID-19 and multiple lockdowns across Europe were still a significant challenge in 2021, the economic recovery was on its way to pre-pandemic levels. Rail freight and intermodal transport were able to continue their recovery, which already began in the second half of 2020. European logistics industry calls for digital standards

GS1 Germany, FENIX consortium member, recently conducted a study to determine support levels and achievable outcomes in the effort to standardize multimodal transport networks and systems. The clear message is that digitization and interoperability are preferred over inefficient and incompatible paper processes. Study participants hailing from the European transport industry affirmed their support for digital standards across the continent. Respondents believe that an interoperable digital supply chain and standardized protocols have far-reaching benefits. These include increased transparency and efficiency because operations can be sped up, manual data entry can be avoided, and complexity and errors can be decreased, which in turn lower administrative costs and increase resilience during business disruptions. Challenges to implementing standardization across the industry include lack of knowledge about existing data solutions and also perceived advantages of maintaining proprietary ownership of developed software. The study results provide the backbone for the next phase in the FENIX Network development and more detailed results can be found on the Research page of the FENIX Network website here: https://fenix-network.eu/research/
